Anthropic shipped a connector on July 22 that lets anyone query the Anthropic Economic Index, a running dataset of how AI actually gets used across the economy, in plain English inside Claude. The live version only works inside claude.ai once you enable the connector yourself, so this is a small preview built the other way: five real questions, answered from the Index's own published findings, each one linked straight to its source.

Computer programmers and copywriters are among the heaviest users of Claude. Usage follows an inverted-U by wage: mid-to-high salary occupations use AI the most, while both low-paying and very-high-paying jobs show comparatively low use.

I pitch automation to small PH businesses mostly on intuition and a handful of case studies. The two findings that stood out here are things I can actually use in that conversation: usage follows an inverted-U by wage, so the founders I talk to are usually sitting in the exact band where AI use is already heaviest, and experienced users hand off less rules-heavy work than beginners do, not more, they use Claude as a back-and-forth collaborator instead of a one-shot task executor. A connector that answers “which tasks in accounting or logistics are people already automating” with real usage data, not a guess, is a better opening argument than anything I currently walk in with.
